Quote from Parkett
"Two of the most obivous themes through which one could examine Danh Vo’s practice are biography and lineage. This is in part a result of the subjects the artist chooses as well as how this family members and their personal story have become intertwined with objects. Many of his works have to do with the complexities of being Vietnamese not in Vietnam as well as the Western-ness already in Vietnam."

Artist Document
“Danh Vo often employs deceptively simple objects and found texts to meld personal biographical narratives with global political histories.“ For his edition for Parkett, the artist asked his father Phung Vo to transcribe short texts on the picture side of used and addressed vintage postcards sent by French citizens during Vietnam’s colonial period back to France.
Like the artist’s project for Parkett, the letter transcribed by this father below ( 2.02.1861 , and the last communication from the French Catholic Saint Théophane Vénard to his own father before he was decapitated in 1861 in Vo’s native Vietnam) “… complicates traditional notions of authorship and demonstrates the centrality of familial relationships within Danh Vo’s work, especially the father-son relationship that is presented here as a tragic historical archetype.” (Quotes by Lauren Hinkson, curator of the artist’s retrospective Take My Breath Away at the Guggenheim Museum in New York (2018).
